Papou took the boat, Leptunia, from Cyprus to Greece. He went from Greece to Italy, then to New York, and on to Detroit. As Papou explains, having no knowledge of the language, alone in a foreign country, is an adventure of its own.

For the first three years in Detroit, Papou stayed with his uncle Nick Phillips (formerly Nick Zingas, see: Other Stories from Cyprus), and Nick's three boys that were around Papou's age. He worked at the grocery store during this time.

After giving his job to his sister Maria's husband, Neophytos, Papou went on the job market.
